
Fabric waste is a common challenge in garment manufacturing. Offcuts are generated during sample development, pattern adjustment, fabric cutting and bulk production. Some pieces are too small or irregular for making complete garments, but this does not mean that every remaining piece has lost its value.
When usable offcuts are mixed with general production waste, opportunities for reuse are lost. A practical fabric waste reduction process begins by identifying where offcuts are generated, separating suitable materials and assigning realistic secondary uses.

The amount and type of waste vary according to the garment design, fabric width, pattern layout, order quantity and production process. Complex styles may require more pattern pieces, while checks, stripes and directional prints may need additional fabric to maintain correct alignment.
Discarding all leftover fabric increases production waste and prevents usable materials from serving another purpose. It can also make it difficult for a garment manufacturer to understand how much material is being lost at different stages of production.
Not every offcut can be reused. Pieces may be damaged, contaminated, too small or unsuitable for another application. The goal is therefore not to retain everything, but to separate materials with practical reuse potential from waste that cannot be processed further.
In 2021, we began collecting and sorting suitable fabric offcuts generated during sampling, cutting and workshop production. This initiative was introduced to reduce unnecessary disposal and identify practical secondary uses for remaining materials.
This process does not eliminate every source of textile waste, but it provides a more organized approach to handling usable fabric remnants within garment manufacturing.

Collected materials are reviewed according to fabric type, size, condition, color and possible application. Pieces that are damaged or unsuitable for further use are separated from those that still have practical value.
Larger remnants may be suitable for small textile products, while smaller pieces can be considered for decorative details or craft applications. Sorting materials by their potential use helps prevent usable pieces from being discarded without evaluation.

The intended product must match the available material. Fabric thickness, stretch, strength, color and washable properties should be considered before an offcut is assigned to a new application.
Reusing offcuts is only one part of fabric waste management. It is also important to reduce avoidable waste before production begins. Accurate patterns, confirmed specifications and efficient marker layouts can improve fabric utilization during cutting.
